“My Document Looks Great on Screen but Prints Poorly. What Can I Do?”

It’s a common problem, especially with photographs or documents which are graphics intensive: Your file looks great on screen, but when you print it the results look completely different to what you were expecting.. Perhaps it’s the colours or just that the general print quality is really poor, when it looks crystal clear and sharp on your monitor. Here are some things to think about:

One of the main problems is that many images are compressed for faster transmission. Whilst that’s great, a low resolution image is useless for printing, even though it might look fine on screen. Ideally an image should be at least 300 dpi to give decent print quality. You can check the dpi of any image file by right-clicking it and looking at the properties. The higher the resolution and image size, the better.

If you’re dealing with graphics such as logos or colour textures, if you can it’s best to get hold of a Vector file. These can be increased in size without decreasing quality and they are great for printing, especially if the output size is large.

Another thing to think about is the calibration of your monitor. If the colours you see on screen bear little resemblance with the colour shades and tones you get on the printed page the it’s a good idea to get your monitor professionally calibrated.

Also make sure you check your file quality settings. Let's say you're converting a file into a PDF - check that your PDF convertor is set to the highest quality setting.

Of course ultimately the final print quality will be down to your printer. While a desktop printer is never going to produce the quality of an expensive production machine, by choosing a high quality device you can maxmise your level of print quality, whatever your budget. Call First Choice Business Systems on 01689 828182 and speak to one of their expert team who can help you choose the best print solution for your needs.
